What To Expect When your Expecting

Whether you're having your first baby or adding on to your family, this is a time of very exciting changes. Here's a few suggestions for getting prepared.

  Meet the Doctor

Consider making an appointment with one of our wonderful doctors or nurse practitioners prior to the birth of your child. These visits are free of charge and allow you to meet the medical provider, get answers to your questions, and tour the office.

Take a Class at the Hospital

Bozeman Deaconess Hospital offers an excellent Childbirth Education Class. This course takes place either over 5 weeks (one 2-hour class a week for five weeks) or over one weekend (two 6-hour days) and is used to discuss a variety of topics related to labor and delivery, immediate newborn care, nursing and the care of your newborn at home. The registration fee is $50.

If you don't have time for the childbirth class, take a tour of the hospital instead. Tours are offered about once a week. You will visit the birthing rooms, nursery, and postpartum rooms at the hospital to get a better sense of what to expect during your stay with your newborn. You will also be shown how to correctly install your newborn's car seat.

When do I need to have the pediatrician see my baby in the clinic?

Typically you will be asked to bring your baby to the pediatrician 2-3 days after you leave the hospital. The next visit with the pediatrician will be when your baby is 3 weeks old. Immunizations are next given when your baby is 2 months old.
